European Digital Ocean Pavilion

@UN Ocean Conference - 2025

Nice, France

At the Third UN Ocean Conference (2 – 13 June, Nice), the European Digital Ocean Pavilion  welcomed over 27,800 visitors, highlighting Europe’s leadership in Ocean science, digital innovation, and international cooperation.   The Pavilion was organized by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Defence Industry and Space (DG DEFIS) in partnership with the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD), the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE), and the Directorate-General for International Partnerships (DG INTPA), with Mercator Ocean International as the implementation partner.

The pavilion featured:

  • 33 sessions, 230 speakers, and 1,800+ online attendees
  • 250,000+ impressions in the ENGAGE exhibition
  •  The EU Digital Twin Ocean (EU DTO) showcased as a game-changer for ocean policy, supporting the launch of the new EU Ocean Pact
  •  Strong emphasis on global partnerships, with initiatives like OPERA and support for Ocean forecasting in Costa Rica and Africa
  •  The Pavilion also marked 10 years of the Copernicus Marine Service, now serving 88,000+ users globally.

Europe’s message was clear: no nation can protect the Ocean alone. Science, data, and international cooperation are essential for a sustainable future.

Why aEuropean Digital Ocean Pavilion?

The European Digital Ocean Pavilion offered an immersive, interactive, and multidimensional gateway into the Digital Twin of the Ocean, showcasing Europe’s leadership in ocean governance and its commitment to a sustainable blue future.
Designed around three distinct spaces -INSPIRE, ENGAGE, and DECIDE- the Pavilion offered visitors a unique perspective on the EU’s assets and capabilities in advancing ocean knowledge. It highlights the integration of cross-cutting digital technologies, including satellite and in situ observations, artificial intelligence, and cutting-edge modeling, to provide a dynamic view of the ocean’s past, present, and future. Through state-of-the-art simulations, multimedia screens, and interactive installations, visitors could visualize ocean processes, explore "what-if" scenarios, and better understand the ocean’s vital signs. The Pavilion underscores Europe’s commitment to harnessing digital innovation for informed decision-making, sustainable ocean management, and global collaboration in ocean conservation.

Dive into the European Digital Ocean Pavilion

The European Digital Ocean Pavilion   was structured around three distinct spaces, each offering visitors a unique opportunity to explore the EU’s achievements and capabilities in advancing ocean knowledge, particularly through cutting-edge digital technologies:

INSPIRE AREA

The INSPIRE area  hosted daily events with morning sessions on key ocean challenges and afternoon sessions showcasing the EU’s leadership in ocean governance.
Key initiatives like the EU Space and Copernicus Programme, the EU Ocean Pact, and the EU Mission to Restore Our Ocean were presented.
A media corner was available for journalist interactions.

DECIDE AREA

The DECIDE area  was an interactive control centre offering decision-makers a hands-on experience of the EU Digital Twin Ocean, developed under the EU Mission “Restore Our Ocean and Waters.”
This space showcased how digital tools - like real-time ocean monitoring, predictive modelling, and AI-powered simulations - can inform and support concrete actions for a sustainable ocean.
