Description
The Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE) is responsible for implementing the EU’s policies on maritime affairs and fisheries. Its mission includes ensuring the sustainable use of ocean resources, supporting coastal communities and the fishing sector, promoting maritime policies to drive a sustainable blue economy, and enhancing international ocean governance.
DG MARE ensures the sustainable management of fisheries through the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) while fostering a blue economy by supporting marine biotechnology, renewable energy, and coastal tourism. It collaborates with global partners to preserve marine biodiversity, regulates marine resource use, and implements maritime spatial planning to balance ecological and economic needs. Through research and innovation, it advances sustainable technologies, ensuring long-term resilience for oceans, fisheries, and coastal communities.
