Coastal physical oceanographe

Cristèle Chevalier is a coastal physical oceanographer and research director at the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD), affiliated with the Mediterranean Institute of Oceanography (MIO). She specializes in the interplay between hydrodynamics and coastal ecosystem ecology, particularly under anthropogenic influences. In November 2024, she earned her Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches (HDR) with a focus on how physical processes shape coastal and littoral ecosystems. Her research includes the use of satellite data and neural networks to monitor phenomena like Sargassum proliferation. citeturn0search11 She also investigates how oceanic processes influence lagoon biodiversity and resilience in the context of climate change. At MIO, she serves as Deputy Director and contributes to interdisciplinary research on coastal dynamics, ecosystem health, and sustainable management strategies.
